Autopsy shows man found at scene of arson died from heart attack

By MICHAEL O'BRIEN Vinton Courier staff journalist

An autopsy, performed by the Franklin County Coroner, confirmed Thomas Jackson, 75, died of a heart attack. Jackson’s body was found in his Goose Creek Road residence Oct. 19 which was the scene of an arson fire.

Vinton County Coroner Dr. Rebecca Huston said Friday that Jackson also had a broken pelvis.

“Mr. Jackson died from a massive attack and he showed signs of advanced coronary artery disease. The pelvic fracture appeared to have been caused by a fall,” Huston said.

Huston said Jackson’s body was found on the floor of the residence. Huston said she has not yet reviewed the full autopsy report and declined further comment saying only that the case is still under investigation.

According to an initial report released by the Vinton County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the residence after receiving a report of a smoke alarm going off and discovered Jackson's body.

State Fire Marshal’s spokeswomen Lyn Tolan last week said the exact cause of the arson fire remains under investigation. Tolan confirm the fire had multiple origins.

A previous statement by from Fire Marshal’s Office said investigators eliminated all accidental causes and found specific evidence that the fire was intentionally set. As an ongoing criminal investigation, specific details including how and where the fire was started were not released.

A Blue Ribbon Arson Reward of up to $5,000 is being offered to anyone with information about the person or persons responsible for the fire. Anyone with information should contact the Division of State Fire Marshal at 1-800-589-2728.
